Hôtel Château de la Terrasse

Built in 1830, this stately residence in Anglo-Palladian style had long been one of the luxurious private mansions built at the turn of the century, with outstanding proprietors such as Collin McCallum and Vesey Boswell, very famous brew masters of the time. Converted into a hotel in 1967, its unique inner architecture was kept, along with a beautifully sculpted wooden staircase and a few authentic stained-glass windows. The mansion overlooks the Dufferin terrace, located between the Citadelle and the Château Frontenac. From the windows, you can observe the majestic St-Lawrence River all the way to the Isle of Orleans.

The hotel is ideally located in Old Quebec, overlooking the Dufferin Terrace, and very close to upper town attractions and restaurants, as well as the steps to lower town. IF you can book one of the rooms with a balcony above the Terrace (and you have to book really early to get one), this is a wonderful experience. We spent five nights at the hotel - the first three in a balcony room, where we could sit outside in the evening and watch people strolling by, listen to the performers, sip a glass of wine....; and the last two in a non-balcony room, which, without that balcony, was quite small and cramped (and we're used to the typical small rooms in old Quebec City). The rooms have bathrooms, but they are VERY tiny. (I believe there are a couple of suites, which are likely much larger.) Breakfast is provided, but is nothing special, which is not really a problem since there are so many places nearby to get a good breakfast. Would I go back? Definitely for a balcony room; otherwise, I would try another option.

Hubby and I stayed for 2 nights at this Chateau around the beginning of August 2006. We stayed in room #8, on the second floor with River views. Room #8 is a large room, and the window in the front opened wide enough for both of us to "lean out". (We really wanted a balcony room, but they were booked. The staff let us sit on the balcony outside of the reception area.) This Chateau is in the Old City, but away from all the hussle and bussle. It is quiet and the scenery is beautiful. The River swept below us, and the Frontenac commanded most of our view. We were within walking distance to EVERYTHING: The Fort, the museums, churches, the art festival, wonderful bars and restaurants. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay within the Old City of Quebec.
